The Lanterne of Light’s classification of demons
In 1409-1410 The Lanterne of Light (an anonymous English Lollard tract often attributed to Wycliffe) provided a classification system based on the Seven Deadly Sins, establishing that each one of the mentioned demons tempted people by means of one of those sins. This list was later used in the works of John Taylor, the Water Poet. (Terms in brackets are those found in the text):
- Lucifer: Pride
- Beelzebub (Belzebub): Envy (envious)
- Satan (Sathanas): Wrath (wraþþe)
- Abaddon (Abadon): Sloth (slowȝ)
- Mammon: Greed (auarouse)
- Belphegor: Gluttony (glotouns)
- Asmodeus: Lust (leccherouse)
Binsfeld’s classification of demons
Peter Binsfeld prepared a classification of demons in 1589 known as the Princes of Hell. His demon classification was, like the earlier English Lanterne of Light, based on the seven deadly sins, though it differed slightly from the English text.
- Lucifer: pride
- Mammon: avarice
- Asmodeus: lust
- Leviathan: envy
- Beelzebub: gluttony
- Satan: wrath
- Belphegor: sloth
It is Binsfeld’s classification that most scholars know and the classification we will be using in this effect.
You don’t have to be catholic or even religious, to understand the spiritual wisdom of the seven deadly sins. The only goal of Temptation is to take you from the power of the light.
Recognizing when you are being lured into temptation is a major step towards creating a path destiny that evolves your soul and gets you to a higher spiritual level. For each sin, there is a corresponding demon and Prince of Hell. These Princes and their minions have tempted man since the exile from Eden and whisper in our ears to do harm to ourselves and others!
- “Eat that cheeseburger and get large fries. You’ll be fine!”
- “Don’t worry about chores, get some more sleep.”
- “Does he think he is better than you? Spread some gossip and ruin him!”
- “You don’t need to help that beggar, you need your money more than him!”
- “There’s no such thing as too much porn!”
Although we are all tempted by every sin, we all have at least one sin that tempts us more than others! One demon we listen to more than any other! Your personal Demon!
Wow, Vince, this is a well thought out presentation! And the artwork on these placards is the best that I have ever seen!
This is a must-have Vince Wilson Relic!
