John opened his séance at the Daytona Magic Convention with Intonation. Nobody would volunteer for a second performance. The owner of the phone asked him to erase the conversation. It was that unsettling.

What it is. A small black platform, about 4 by 7 inches, the size of a phone. It sits on the table and raises the borrowed phone about half an inch so everyone can see it. From a distance you can barely see it at all.

How it plays. You borrow a spectator’s phone and set it to record. You ask the spirit a question. Nobody in the room hears an answer. When the recording is played back, the answer is there, in a voice, in the gap you left. You control when each response is recorded, hands-free if you want, and your phone or watch buzzes so you know the exact moment each answer has finished and you can move on to the next question. The whole two-way conversation lives on their phone, not yours.

What’s included. The Intonation unit with USB-C charging (under 4 hours to charge, runs for days) and a second USB-C port for loading your own sound files, plus the free ArcaneHub app for phone and watch. Channel. Leave the channel on 1 unless you already own an Intonation and want to run two units in the same room. Then pick any channel other than the one you have.

Phone or remote. Both choices are the complete Intonation unit. Pick the phone or watch option and you trigger each answer from the free ArcaneHub app, with a buzz to tell you when the spirit has finished. Pick the remote option and you also get a handheld remote, so you can trigger Intonation from your pocket without touching a screen.

More ways to use it

  • Mount it under a table. The sound travels through wood and some metals, so a voice can come up through a cube, a box or a framed photo on the table.
  • Have everyone at the table put their ears down “to honor the artifact.” They all hear the voice from just under their ear.
  • Same trick against a wall.
  • It can put a voice inside any box without being in the box, and can play through most instruments.
